CSU men’s swimming & diving wins Magnus Cup

The 12th annual Magnus Cup resulted in a championship for the men’s swimming & diving team, while the women’s team took 5th.

The CSU men’s swimming & diving team won the Magnus Cup championship Saturday at the Busbey Natatorium, ending the three-day tournament with 1,662 points. 

The runner-up was St. Bonaventure University with 1,312 points, while Youngstown State University took third with 1,240 points. 

The Vikings started individual swimming with a win from Alex Cucu in the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 50.70 seconds. Josh Merchbaker set the meet record in the preliminary round with a time of 50.62 seconds, swimming a time of 51.15 seconds in the finals to come in third. 

Other Vikings placing in the individual medley include Aidan Florio at third with a time of 51.71 seconds, Michael Cucu at 16th with a time of 53.16 seconds and Nathan Dunhac at 17th with a time of 53.17 seconds. 

In the 50-yard butterfly, Daniel Lyngaas came in sixth with a time of 22.01 seconds. Cameron Craft placed 10th with a time of 22.70 seconds, Andrew Arslanian won the B-final after finishing in 22.88 seconds, Ethan Mumma placed 14th with a time of 22.96 seconds, Nate Steiner placed 16th with a time of 23.04 seconds and Seth Smith rounded the group out at 19th with a time of 23.26 seconds. 

Jackson Nester won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:44.88. Brock Wallace placed ninth with a time of 1:52.62 and Tanner Beck placed 13th after swimming a time of 1:51.70. 

The Vikings claimed the fifth through ninth places of the 100-yard freestyle with Dogukan Tombul placing fifth with a time of 45.27 seconds, Connor Green placing sixth with a time of 45.30 seconds, Lyngaas placing seventh with a time of 45.49 seconds, Craft placing eighth with a time of 45.51 seconds and Joe Parkhurst placing ninth with a time of 45.68 seconds. Noah Greer placed 18th in the freestyle with a time of 46.35 seconds. 

Tyler Schultze won the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing with a time of 1:58.06. Florio took third with a time of 2:00.08, Ahmad Abdalhak was the runner-up in the B-final with a time of 2:02.35, Alex Cucu was 14th with a time of 2:04.56 and Dunhac was 16th with a time of 2:05.15. 

Merchbaker placed second in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 22.67 seconds, while Tombul took fourth with a time of 22.92 seconds and Wallace placed 13th with a time of 24.34 seconds. 

Paddy Johnston swam a school record with a time of 1:45.26 to place second in the 200-yard butterfly. Steiner came in eighth with a time of 1:52.05. 

The competition ended for CSU with a meet record in the 400-yard freestyle relay as Green, Lyngaas, Johnston and Tombul finished in 2:57.34. 

For platform diving, James Wolf scored 258.70 points to take first, and the team won the competition with a score of 273.40. 

Women’s Swimming & Diving 

The women’s team finished fifth at the Magnus Cup with 670 points. 

The University of Akron took first with 1,728.5 points, while Tulane University came in second with 1,358.5 points and Xavier University was third with 723.5 points.

Isabella Caraballo placed eighth with a time of 17:12.52 in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Mackenzie Lipnick finished 10th in the freestyle with a time of 17:19.49. 

In the 100-yard individual medley, Giovanna Cappabianca placed sixth with a time of 57.54 seconds. Ellie Mckibbin placed 13th with a time of 59.63 seconds and Skyler Turner placed 19th with a time of 1:00.04. 

Haley Palmer finished 19th in the 50-yard butterfly after swimming a time of 25.92 seconds. 

Eva Smith placed eighth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:02.93. Kayla Brock placed second in the B-final with a time of 2:03.40. 

Grace Chelf won the 100-yard freestyle B-final after getting a time of 50.99 seconds, while Ana Sofia Sousa placed 16th with a time of 51.46 seconds. 

Cappabianca swam the second fastest time in program history, 2:16.40, placing her fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke. Kellsie Krisch placed sixth with a time of 2:19.3 and Skyler Turner finished 18th with a time of 2:25.93. 

The Vikings took sixth and seventh place in the 50-yard backstroke as Smith took sixth with a time of 26.27 seconds and Chelf took seventh with a time of 26.42 seconds. 

Grace Butcher placed 14th in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:06.54 and Tess Walsh placed 18th with a time of 2:08.94. 

The team ended the meet with an eighth place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay as Kaelah Baccus, Cappabianca, Chelf and Sousa swam a 3:26.12 time. 

Next, the men’s and women’s teams take on Calvin University at 4 p.m. on Jan. 10, 2025 at the Busbey Natatorium for their senior day matchup.
