CSU women’s tennis secures share of HLTennis regular season title after Oakland win

The Vikings ended their regular season with a 4-3 win at Oakland, claiming a share of the Horizon League Regular Season Championship. 

The Cleveland State women’s tennis team finished the regular season on Sunday, April 19 with a 4-3 victory at Oakland. 

The victory on Sunday secured the Vikings a share of the Horizon League Regular Season Championship – the eighth regular season crown in the program’s history. 

Cleveland State started the day by taking the doubles point, with matching 6-4 victories from Ella Franz/Melliz Petkova Mustafa (No. 1) and Jenna Redmile/Laura Tapia (No. 3). 

The Vikings added to the lead early in singles play, as Leah Geisz picked up a 6-3, 6-0 victory at the No. 6 spot to put CSU ahead at 2-0, before Oakland scored its first point at No. 4. 

Tapia brought the Vikings to a 3-1 advantage with a 7-5, 6-3 result at No. 5 singles. 

CSU clinched the match during the remaining three singles matches in third sets. Franz fought for a 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles. 

Next up for The Vikings is the Horizon League Tournament, which starts first-round matches on Friday, April 24.
