Cleveland State started the fencing season Saturday at the Ohio State Invitational in open competition. 

The men's side saw four athletes place in the top ten for the three combined events. Epee was the best weapon on the day with Reilly Jones placing third and Connor Lindow coming in eighth.
 
In foil, Nigel Copeland placed sixth and Simon Caisse came in ninth.
 
On the women's side, Anna Klimeno was the runner-up in the pee, and Steliana Strugar came in sixth for foil.

The teams were competing for the first time under new head coach Hector Florencia.

On Sunday, both teams went 3-2 at the OSU Duals.

On the men's side, the Vikings defeated West Point (22-5), Ohio State Club Team (23-4) and Denison (14-13), while dropping their matches against Purdue (14-13) and OSU (26-1).
 
The Green and White women defeated Purdue (18-9), West Point (20-7) and Ohio State Club Team (24-1), while losing to Denison (17-10) and OSU (21-6).
 
For the men, Nigel Copeland and Jack Miller posted seven wins apiece in foil. Reilly Jone topped the epee team with nine victories, and Simon Caisse had eleven wins for the sabre squad.
 
The women's team was led by Steliana Strugar with 13 wins for foil, Anna Klimenko had a team-best eleven victories for epee, and Aubrey Testroet had 12 wins for sabre.

Up next: The Vikings will return to action at the Drew Invite in Madison, New Jersey, on Nov. 7-8.
