LATHISMS named CSU professor Lopez Valdez as one of its mathematician of the day during Hispanic Heritage Month.

LATHISMS named Cleveland State University assistant professor Hiram Lopez Valdez, Ph.D., as its "Mathematician of the Day" for Sept. 17.

Latinx and Hispanics in the Mathematical Sciences was founded in 2016 to showcase the contributions of Latinx and Hispanic mathematicians during Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States, from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.

Lopez Valdez said he loves being a professor and teaching students about mathematics.

Respect and patience with students and for people in general, pleasure to teach and to explain topics several times in different ways, passion and love to transmit the knowledge,” said Lopez Valdez. “Those are some of the main ingredients of a successful professor.”

Lopez Valdez’s main areas of research are coding theory, commutative algebra and network coding. He earned his doctorate in mathematics from the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute in Mexico City in 2016 under the direction of professor Rafael H. Villarreal, Ph.D.

“The goal is to engage students in science, because a common concern from students is that they do not know how math can be used,” said Lopez Valdez. “Of course, students know classic applications from calculus, but they struggle to explain how the rest of the math can be used in practice.”

LATHISMS aims to provide an accessible platform that features the multifaceted and diverse nature of the Latinx and Hispanic mathematics community and inspire the younger generation of Latinx mathematicians.
