Program for nonprofits launches
The Center for Public and Nonprofit Management in the College of Urban Affairs, like an excellently prepared dessert, combines academics and professional experience with three ingredients—student enrichment, professional development and community engagement.
At the Nonprofit Management Academy information session Jan. 23, over a light lunch and refreshments, a room full of professionals learned more about a new program slated to begin in May.
Alexandra Higl, program manager at the center, described the academy as a “one-year comprehensive program tailored for nonprofit personnel.”
Participants will engage in customized workshops during the trimester program that provide them with the necessary tools to be successful and better equip their organizations to efficiently serve their clients.
At the end of the program, practitioners will receive a Nonprofit Management Academy certificate, the opportunity to receive Levin College credit upon completion and the potential to work toward national credentials. Although the program requires attending courses every other week, in person, the materials and assignments will be posted to Blackboard.
While studying at John Carroll University, Higl realized she could make a difference even though the passion she had for nonprofit management was not what she went to school for.
“I knew I really liked writing and storytelling, but through my continued journey, the opportunity presented itself to go in one direction or another,” she said. “I chose nonprofit and now I get to incorporate the skills I acquired in undergrad in my current role.”
Linda Uveges, COO of City Mission, can attest to how great the programs are at the college.
“I have learned so much beneficial information from the coursework completed at Levin,” said Uveges.
The City Mission is a nonprofit that focuses on empowering men, women, and children to overcome homelessness.
The Jan. 23 information session was the first event of the semester, but more sessions will be held in the future as the program planners build the first class of 20-25 professionals.
The center has relaunched a quarterly newsletter, which interested persons can find at https://mailchi.mp/csuohio.edu/cpnm-quarterly-vol-3.
