CSU men’s soccer shut out Detroit Mercy in a road victory

The Vikings earned a 2-0 road win against Detroit Mercy on Saturday evening as their record improves to 5-2-5 overall, 3-0-3 in Horizon League play.

Cleveland State (5-2-5, 3-0-3) recorded its fourth shutout of the season in a 2-0 win against Detroit Mercy (5-7-2, 2-3-1) Saturday evening. 

The Vikings’ unbeaten streak now extends to nine games, which is the longest under coach Sinisa Ubiparipovic and the second longest in program history.

Cleveland State scored the opening goal in the 15th minute when Ognjen Bozovic finished off a pass from Matteo Correia. The scoreline remained 1-0 at the intermission, with the Vikings holding a 6-5 edge in shots.

Peleg Armendariz doubled the lead in the 59th minute with his team-best fourth goal of the season on a shot from the top of the box off the feed from Uzman Ramees.

The Vikings held a 16-10 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. Armendariz led the game with seven shots, with two of them being on target. Ramees provided a strong contribution off the bench with three shots, including two on target attempts.

Ryan Poling recorded three saves as he picked up his fourth shutout of the year.

Cleveland State will compete in its last non-league match of the season at Mercyhurst, in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 7:30 p.m.
