Theta Rho hosts bake sale to raise breast cancer awareness

The Theta Rho chapter will host a bake sale in the Innerlink on Thursday to honor breast cancer survivors, spread awareness and connect the campus community.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Theta Rho chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. is inviting Cleveland State University students to join them for a meaningful cause from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday., with the group’s annual bake sale on the Innerlink.

The bake sale will include homemade treats, pink decorations and helpful information about breast cancer awareness and support. The event is much more than a chance to enjoy cookies and cupcakes. It's a way to spread hope, unity, awareness and build community.

“It’s about showing unity, spreading hope and reminding everyone that early detection can save lives,” said Makayla Pettiford, secretary and financial secretary for the Theta Rho chapter. “As members of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., service and community impact are at the heart of what we do.”

Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among women in the United States, making up about 32% of all newly diagnosed cancers in women each year, according to BreastCancer.org. In 2025, an estimated 316,950 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, and about 42,170 women are expected to die from the disease. There are currently more than four million women in the U.S. living with a history of breast cancer including those in treatment and survivors, the organization reports.

For members of Theta Rho, this event is deeply personal. Soror Sarena Robinson has a family member who is a breast cancer survivor and is celebrating 53 years of life and cancer-free living this year.

“Seeing her strength reminds us why we keep hosting this bake sale,” Pettiford said. “It’s about celebrating life, honoring those who fight and supporting families in our community who are affected by this disease.”

Beyond raising awareness, Theta Rho hopes to create a sense of togetherness on campus.

“Our hope is that this bake sale brings our campus together in kindness and awareness,” Pettiford said. “Supporting breast cancer awareness shows how powerful our community can be when we unite behind a cause. It’s a reminder that even small actions, like stopping for a cupcake, can make an impact.”

The sorority also plans to continue hosting events throughout the year to promote health awareness, from mental health initiatives to fitness programs and disease prevention campaigns. Pettiford encourages other student groups to take similar steps.

“Pick a health cause that resonates with your organization and community,” she said. “Start with a social media campaign, then organize an event on campus. The awareness and impact you create will inspire others and make a real difference.”

Events like the bake sale do more than raise money. They inspire awareness and a deeper understanding of why taking care of your health matters.

“Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about recognizing courage, strength and resilience,” Pettiford said. “It’s about appreciating your health, taking preventive measures and showing support for the people around you. We hope students leave the bake sale not only with a treat but also with a stronger sense of community and awareness.”

The bake sale will take place Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Innerlink, and all students are encouraged to attend. Proceeds will support breast cancer awareness initiatives and community health programs run by Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc.

Whether students stop by for a cupcake or to learn about prevention, they will leave with a stronger sense of the importance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
