
CSU men’s swimming and diving wins Akron Zips Classic
Cleveland State University's men’s swimming and diving capped the Akron Zips Classic at The University of Akron, Ohio, finishing in first place Saturday night, after leading in each of the two days of competition.
Friday
The Vikings opened the competition on Oct. 10, coming in second in the 400-yard medley as Jaden Davillier, Tyler Schultze, Daniel Lyngaas, and Gabe Hudgen finished in 3:18.21.
Xander Austin won the 3-meter diving with a score of 276.80.
Cleveland State finished first and second in the 500-yard freestyle behind Davillier’s and Brock Wallace’s times of 4:31.47 and 4:34.86 respectively.
CSU’s Joe Parkhurst sprinted to a meet record time of 20.34 in the 50-yard freestyle.
The Vikings capped the day by setting a new meet record in the 800-yard freestyle relay with Davillier, Lyngaas, Hudgens, and Jacopo Lanzo finishing in 6:41.16.
Cleveland State led the Akron Zips Classic after the first day with 360 points. Youngstown State was second with 300, and Xavier was third with 225.
Saturday
The Vikings started the second day of the Zips Classic strong as Parkhurst, Lanzo, Justin Schneider and Lyngaas won the 200-yard freestyle in a meet-record time of 1:21.42.
Cleveland State went first and second in the 400-yard IM behind Aidan Florio with a time of 4:02.30 and Wallace with a 4:02.80.
Lanzo put up a winning time in the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:39.60, while Schultze set a meet record time of 54.59 in the 100-yard breaststroke.
The final session kicked off with the 200-yard medley relay team of Davillier, Schultze, Schneider and Lyngaas finishing in second place with a time of 1:28.86.
Cleveland State earned second-place finishes from Noah Lang in the 1650-yard freestyle, clocking a time of 15:54.25, and Noah Greer in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:50.34.
The Green and White claimed the top two spots in the 100-yard freestyle, with Lyngaas setting a meet-record time of 44.89 and Hudgens close behind in 45.29.
The Vikings swept the top three spots in the 200-yard breaststroke behind Florio's meet-record time of 1:59.46, Gorkem Sulun's 2:02.54, and Schultze's 2:02.60.
In 1-meter diving, Austin took second with a score of 261.15 and Liam Pearson finished third with a score of 255.45.
Cleveland State topped the final standings with an overall score of 1193.5 points. Youngstown State finished second with 938 points, and Xavier was third with 762.5 points.
What’s next?
Cleveland State will compete at home for the first time this season, hosting St. Bonaventure at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium on Friday, Oct. 24, and Saturday, Oct. 25.
