CSU board of trustees approves Dr. Nigamanth Sridhar as provost
Cleveland State University's board of trustees at its Jan. 26 meeting approved President Laura Bloomberg's recommendation that Dr. Nigamanth Sridhar be appointed CSU provost.
Dr. Sridhar had been serving as CSU's temporary provost since May 2022.
Ahead of the board's unanimous vote in support of Bloomberg's choice for the top academic position at the university, CSU's president reiterated her confidence in Sridhar.
“I consulted internally, but I knew right away the person that I wanted to name interim would be Professor Sridhar,” the president told the trustees, noting that her appointment as CSU's president last April left open the provost position, which she had previously held.
Dr. Sridhar was on leave and working with the National Science Foundation when President Bloomberg was promoted, but he accepted the position, starting work on May 9.
Bloomberg appointed Sridhar interim provost right after the board unexpectedly removed her predecessor, Harlan Sands, on April 26, 2022. The board at the time said only that Sand's departure was necessary to move CSU forward, a decision the board has yet to explain to the university community.
In her recommendation to the board, President Bloomberg described Dr. Sridhar – who also serves on the school board for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) – as being “deeply-committed” to Cleveland.
Bloomberg also said that the provost has become “a really close thought partner,” whom she described as someone who "can push back, who can say ‘let’s take a look at this from another angle.’”
“I think we knock heads fairly respectfully, and we always land in a place where we can both feel really proud of the decisions,” President Bloomberg said. “I’m excited about that.”
The next CSU Board of Trustees meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March, 16.
