Vikings men’s swimming and diving lose to Miami in their season opener
Cleveland State Men's Swimming and Diving faced the Miami Redhawks, losing 183-115 in their season opener on Sept. 30 at Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center.
This marked the first meeting between the two teams since 2021 when the Redhawks narrowly defeated the Vikings 132-130. This time, the outcome was less favorable for Cleveland State.
The Vikings men's swimming and diving team has faced challenges against Miami, with a winless record of 0-6-1 against the Redhawks since 2012. However, there were positive takeaways.
Cleveland State secured victories in three events:
- Jackson Nester, Tanner Beck, Vittorio Cappabianca and Jake Taulbee claimed the top four positions in the 1000-yard freestyle.
- Paddy Johnston won the 100-yard backstroke.
- Josh Merchbaker won the 50-yard freestyle.
The result was not unexpected, given CSU welcomed ten freshmen onto their roster this year. Leadership and gaining experience are expected to play roles for the Vikings moving forward.
Despite the loss, Cleveland State head coach Hannah Burandt was optimistic about the team’s prospects. "We have so much to be proud of today, individually and collectively. We had moments that really stood out including the men sweeping the 1,000, and Josh winning the 50," Burandt said. "This season is going to be fun and exciting for the Vikes."
