South Carolina beats Iowa to win NCAA Women's Championship

The South Carolina Gamecocks defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes in the 2024 NCAA women’s championship on Sunday in Cleveland’s Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

The South Carolina Gamecocks defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes for the 2024 NCAA women’s championship, April 7, at Cleveland’s Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

It was the third time the Gamecocks have taken home the title of national champions, after they beat Iowa 87-75. The Gamecocks completed their season with a perfect 38-0 record, avenging their loss to Iowa in last year’s final four.

Iowa star Caitlin Clark was one of many seniors playing in their last college game. Clark fell short of the national championship title for the second year, after losing to LSU a year ago. However, in her time at Iowa, Clark has rewritten the NCAA record book. As USC coach Lindsay Gottlieb said, "It’s Caitlin Clark’s world, but it was South Carolina’s season."

After their win, the Gamecocks senior center, Kamill Cardoso, was named Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. In the title game she had 15 points and controlled the paint with 17 rebounds and three blocked shots.

South Carolina is now 3-0 in national championship games, with their other titles coming from  the 2017 and 2022 seasons. Over the last three seasons, the Gamecocks have only lost three games, while winning 109.

South Carolina has multiple players who have declared for the 2024 WNBA draft including Cardoso, Kaitlyn Davis and McKenzie Forbes. Iowa's Clark already announced her decision in February to enter this year's WNBA draft, set for Monday, April 15 at 7:30 p.m.
