CSU women's soccer falls to Detroit Mercy 2-1 on Alumnae Day

Cleveland State was valiant in defeat Sunday, but remains winless for the season.

Cleveland State University women’s soccer (0-13-1, 0-7-0) lost a 2-1 Horizon League match to Detroit Mercy (7-6-2, 5-0-2) on Sunday afternoon. The game marked the annual Alumnae Day, with several former players honored during halftime.

The Detroit Mercy Titans opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Abbey Lodato converted a long through ball from Hailey Matthews. Cleveland State quickly responded, tying the game four minutes later when Mayra Sesmas netted her fourth goal of the season off a pass from Sophia Cucchetti.

The score remained tied at halftime, with Detroit Mercy leading in shots, 6-4.

Lodato struck again in the 62nd minute, scoring the game-winner for the Titans as the Vikings fell 2-1 at home.

Cleveland State was outshot 10-7 but held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Eleanor Simkonis and Sesmas each recorded two shots, while Elyse Broderick made three saves in goal.

Sunday's loss meant CSU has yet to get into the win column this season. The team will be looking to end that streak Thursday, when the Vikings travel to Youngstown State for a 6 p.m. match.
