CSU swimming splits result against Niagara - men win, women lose

The Niagara swimming meet was a struggle for the women’s team while the men secured a narrow win for the Vikings.

The Cleveland State women’s swim team (1-1) lost 120-85 to Niagara University (1-1) Friday at the Niagara invite in New York state. Despite the loss, several Vikings put up a strong performance. 

Sophomore Grace Chelf won in the 50-yard freestyle (24.00) and 100-yard freestyle (53.07). Graduate student Giovanna Cappabianca won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:09.94

Cleveland State sophomores Audrey Butcher and Ella Ciez took second and third place in the 100-yard individual medley.

The Viking also claimed the second and third spots in the 200-yard backstroke with Butcher touching in 2:09.33 and Hannah Panko in 2:10.67.

Freshman Isabella Caraballo was the runner-up in the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:34.79 and in the 500-yard freestyle with 5:10.12.

Kayla Brock earned the Vikings third place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.17). In the 50-yard freestyle, Haley Palmer came in third with a time of 24.74.

Men’s Swimming 

On the men’s side, the Vikings (2-0) defeated the Niagara Purple Eagles (0-1) with a score of 107-98 in a close contest.

Paddy Johnston started the meet strongly for CSU with wins in the 50-yard freestyle (20.75) and 100-yard freestyle (45.93).

The Vikings then went 1-2 in the 1000-yard freestyle thanks to Brock Wallace (9:51.46) and Tanner Beck (10:02.57).

Freshman Nate Steiner won the 200-yard butterfly for the Vikings in 1:56.23

Jackson Nester won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:39.08, while Connor Green came in third, clocking 4:52.25.

Wallace claimed his second win of the meet in the 200-yard backstroke, touching in 1:53.52.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, Tyler Schultze finished second in 2:07.74. And Cameron Craft earned third place in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing in 47.69.

Next up, the CSU women face Eastern Michigan Friday at 3 p.m. at home. Then the men and women travel to Youngstown for an away meet Saturday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m.
