CSU men’s soccer shuts out Purdue Fort Wayne, 3-0
CSU men’s soccer shut out Purdue Fort Wayne 3-0 in Saturday’s senior night victory at home on Krenzler Field.
The win marked the team’s second shutout of the year and first in league play.
Six seniors were recognized before the game: Anthony Calleri, Quinn Groves, Bojan Kolevski, Ryan Poling, Marko Rimac and RC Schmeider.
The Vikings started strong, almost scoring in the 17th minute off a shot from Caleb Trowbridge that a Mastodon defender cleared from the backline. 10 minutes later, Rimac hit the crossbar. Then, in the 31st minute, Kolevski almost scored from the right side of the box.
Cleveland State finally struck gold in the 38th minute as Kolevski finished off a pair of passes from Matteo Correia and Tom Mertz, putting the Vikings ahead 1-0.
Purdue Fort Wayne lost a player to a red card three minutes later, and played the remainder of the game a man down.
The Vikings went into halftime with a 10-0 advantage in shots.
CSU continued its momentum after the break, when Correia finished off a through ball from Kolevski in the 61st minute, stretching the Vikings' lead to 2-0.
Kolevski scored his second goal of the game in the 74th minute when he finished off a pass from Mertz, leading the Vikings to victory 3-0.
CSU held a 14-6 edge in shots and 8-3 advantage in shots on goal over Purdue Fort Wayne.
Kolevski finished with four shots, including three on frame, while Mertz followed with three shots.
Poling recorded his first collegiate shutout, making three saves.
Next: The Vikings (5-6-3 overall, 2-4-1 Horizon League), languishing at the bottom of the Horizon League table, face the Wright State Raiders at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, in their final away game of the regular season.
