CSU men's soccer earns first victory of the season in win over Oakland

Heck’s last-minute goal sealed Cleveland State’s 1-0 win against the visiting Golden Grizzlies.

Cleveland State men's soccer picked up its first win of the season Saturday, defeating Oakland 1-0 at Krenzler Field. The game doubled as Alumni and Youth Night, with both groups recognized at halftime.

The teams played a scoreless first half, with the best chance for either team coming in the 35th minute when Viking Matteo Correia’s shot struck the post.

The match appeared to be headed towards another draw until freshman Lennart Heck scored his first collegiate goal in the 89th minute. Heck converted on a cross from Josip Rimac to deliver the game-winner. 

The Vikings (1-2-3, 1-0-1 Horizon League) outshot the Golden Grizzlies 14-9, including a 4-3 edge in shots on goal and a 6-2 advantage on corner kicks. 

Correia finished with a game-high four shots, while Rimac added three off the bench.

Ryan Poling tallied his second straight shutout, stopping three shots.
