CSU men’s basketball earns multiple Horizon League awards

The Vikings secured Freshman and Sixth Man of the Year awards, with five players named to all-league teams. Next up, CSU faces Youngstown in the Horizon League semifinals on Monday.

Cleveland State’s men’s basketball was well represented in the Horizon League’s postseason 2024-25 #HLMBB awards March 3 with standout performances earning recognition across various categories. 

Je’Shawn Stevenson was named Freshman of the Year, while Chase Robinson took home the Sixth Man of the Year award.

In addition, five Vikings received All-League selections, showcasing the team's depth and achievements this season. 

Stevenson made an immediate impact for the Vikings as a guard, securing Horizon League Freshman of the Year after previously earning six Freshman of the Week honors throughout the season. 

Averaging 9.4 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game, Stevenson recorded 14 double-digit scoring performances and finished among the league’s top 10 in steals. 

Robinson’s energy and performance off the bench earned him the Sixth Man of the year title. 

Playing in every game, Robinson earned 8.9 points per game, reached double figures 14 times and maintained a 76% free throw percentage. 

Cleveland State’s strong defense and balanced scoring earned the team multiple All-Horizon League awards.

Tevin Smith earned First Team All-League while also securing a spot on the All-Defensive Team. 

Averaging 13.7 points per game, Smith ranked among the league's top 10 in scoring, free throw percentage and field goal percentage. 

His 37-point performance against Oakland was the second highest single game total for a player in the Horizon League this season. 

Smith was a key perimeter defender for the Vikings and led the conference in defensive efficiency. 

Dylan Arnett and Tahj Staveskie were named Third Team All-League. 

Arnett, averaging just under 12 points per game, ranked in the top 10 in rebounding, blocked shots and offensive boards and was named to the All-Defensive Team.

Staveskie ranked in the league’s top five for 3-point shooting percentage and threes made per game, averaging 13+ points per contest.

Reece Robinson joined Stevenson on the All-Freshman Team. 

Robinson, who earned a starting role midseason, averaged 5.6 points and 4.4 rebounds per game, showcasing his consistency with six double-digit scoring games and four double-digit rebounding performances. 

After a 20-win regular season, Cleveland State entered the Barbados Horizon League’s Men’s Basketball Championship as the No. 2 seed.

In their quarterfinal match at home on Thursday, the Vikings defeated Northern Kentucky 68-63. Next up, they face no. 4 seed Youngstown State in the semifinal round on Monday evening in Indianapolis.
