Third bomb threat targets CSU, Euclid Commons evacuated

Cleveland State received its third bomb threat this academic year with the others coming in November and December.

Cleveland State police evacuated Euclid Commons and the administration building on Thursday, Feb. 24 around 10:00 a.m. after a bomb threat was made.

Bomb detection K-9 units and emergency personnel from CSU Police, Cleveland Transit Police and Cleveland Fire were dispatched to the scene.

After residents were evacuated from Euclid Commons, they were directed to CSU’s Physical Education Building for shelter.

“First there was an alarm that went off, and they told us all to leave through the nearest exit. They were directing people to the PE building if they got cold,” Nicholas McFarren, a Euclid Commons resident said at the time. “They are giving us updates through the text message system but it’s quite vague.”

Emergency personnel cleared the administration building to return to normal activities at 10:50 a.m. and then Euclid Commons at 11:02 a.m.

The bomb threat was CSU's third this academic year. The first bomb threat came on Nov. 4 targeting the Law school. The second threat targeted Fenn Tower, Dec. 1.

Several universities nationwide were targeted in late 2021 by a spate of bomb threats. At the time, CSU said no apparent link had been established between those threats and the threats made against Cleveland State, but that university, local and federal agencies were investigating the incidents.

At least 14 HBCUs reported bomb threats Tuesday, Feb.1, the first day of Black History Month. The FBI is investigating those threats as hate crimes.

Making a bomb threat in Ohio is a second-degree felony which could result in penalties and possible jail time.
