Paula Calise unpacks the art of saying "hello"

Calise spoke to CSU students and faculty about “The Art of Hello," her professional branding program on how to introduce yourself in a professional and memorable way. The event was part of the CSU Executive MBA Distinguished Speaker Series.

Cleveland State’s Executive MBA Distinguished Speaker Series featured Paula Calise on Mar. 6. She spoke about introducing yourself in a business setting using her professional branding methodology called “The Art of Hello.”

Calise created “The Art of Hello” to help new and experienced professionals introduce themselves in a memorable way that will grab hiring professional’s attention and make oneself memorable.

“My name is Paula Calise and I fill hard-to-fill positions,” she said.  “That is my 'Art of Hello' introduction and I have been using it successfully for the past thirteen years.”

Calise is the founder and principal of an executive recruiting firm called Linked Executive Search located in Dallas. Forbes named Linked Executive Search the best recruiting firm in Texas and the 9th best firm of its kind in the U.S.

The firm's founder explained why it is important to create your own one-line introduction.

“The Art of Hello is the distillation of your professional life.” Calise said. “It differentiates you from people who have similar professions, and the reason is because none of us do the exact same work and have the exact same history.”

Calise also explained why this is not just a one-liner.

“Done right, your 'Art of Hello' is your brand promise,” Calise said.  “This small short brand promise or your 'Art of Hello' introduction is just a jumping off point to get to know you better.”

An event attendee asked Calise for some advice for college freshmen on what to put in their LinkedIn profiles, particularly the headline and about sections on their profiles.

“Your name and your 'Art of Hello' introduction,” Calise said.  “It is who you are as a professional.”

Her final piece of advice for younger students was an 'Art of Hello' introduction that students can use before they are finished with school.

“Today I am a student on my way to a such-and-such career,” Calise said. “This is your aspirational introduction of yourself.”
