Cleveland State defeats UIC to inch closer to Horizon League regular season title

The Vikings won a close 1-0 contest in their final home game of the season.

The Cleveland State men’s soccer team pulled out a 1-0 victory over UIC on Saturday night to move closer to clinching the Horizon League regular season title.

The win improved the Vikings to 9-5 overall, including an 8-1 record in conference play. CSU sits atop the Horizon League, half a game ahead of rival Oakland who sits at 7-1-1 in the conference after a victory of their own on Saturday night.

Prior to kickoff, the Green and White held a senior night ceremony to honor their graduating class. The ceremony saw the Vikings honor seniors Thomas M’Barek, Andrew Nicholas, Stejpan Mijic-Barisic, Tommy Paltani and Ivan Bavic.

Following a scoreless start for most of the first half, Bojan Kolevski was able to put the Vikings on the board with six minutes remaining in the first half off an assist from Albert Portas. The goal turned out to be enough for the Vikings as they never surrendered the lead.

Cleveland State went into the half after dominating on the shot chart for 45 minutes. The Green and White outshot UIC by a margin of 9-1 in the first half, putting pressure on goalie Andres Vasquez.

UIC attempted to level the score in the second half as they outshot CSU 6-3 in the second 45 minutes of play, but the Vikings defense held strong to secure the victory.

Although he did not experience much pressure throughout the game, Cleveland State goalkeeper Omeed Naeemy earned his fifth shutout of the season after recording one save in the victory. His opposition, Vasquez, found himself busier, recording four saves on five shots in the UIC net.

Although CSU was unable to clinch the Horizon League title with the victory due to Oakland’s victory, a win over Wright State next Saturday would seal the regular season championship heading into the postseason. The Vikings will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 26 as they travel down I-77 to take on Akron on the road. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
