The Campus Activities Board hosted its annual CABsino event Friday, Nov. 21, in the CSU Student Center, offering students and visitors a night of mock gambling, live music and food.

CAB chooses a different theme each year, with this year’s event recommending a black-tie dress code, though students were free to wear whatever they wanted, with many opting for the latter.

The evening featured live performances from a DJ and a band playing a mix of music.

Attendees were able to gamble with mock chips in several games, including blackjack, baccarat, roulette, poker and Texas hold ‘em.

Gaming tables were set up on the first and third floors of the Student Center. The third floor provided a more isolated and chill atmosphere away from the louder music downstairs.

“This is more of a part-time job, so this is my third or fourth time attending this CSU event,” said Mark Liebling, a blackjack dealer. “The best part about this job is I get to enjoy dealing and not lose money because I enjoy gambling, just don’t enjoy losing real money.”

A buffet offered a wide variety of foods, including a salad bar, pasta, macaroni, breads, a soda fountain and roasted tenderloin.

Cleveland State students could attend for free, but non-student guests had to pay a $10 entry fee. Each attendee received a voucher for 50 chips to start off with, but unlike previous years there was no bonus for dressing according to the theme.

“My favorite part of CABsino was probably playing blackjack or roulette because they were my favorite games to play and because they're the easiest ones,” said Ryan, a guest and CSU alumnus. “I graduated in May, but my sister's a student here, and I wanted to come back with her to attend the event again.”

Players could redeem their chips for raffle tickets to win prizes such as a Nintendo Switch, Bluetooth headphones, a tablet or a mystery prize.

CAB will announce the winners for the raffles on Dec. 1.
