Earth Day sparks action: Cleveland’s path to a greener future

Cleveland is turning Earth Day awareness into tangible climate action.

Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22, but its roots run deep in history. First recognized in 1970, Earth Day was created to address environmental disasters. It brought together millions of people across the U.S. to demand change.

More than 50 years later, Earth Day is now a global movement. With over 190 countries participating, it’s a day to reflect and act. It reminds us that our planet’s health is fragile and the choices we make today will impact future generations.

In 2013, Cleveland started the initiative to help conquer climate change with the Climate Action Plan (CAP). The plan outlines goals to reduce emissions, increase sustainability and build a more resilient city.

CAP is an initiative that aims to help not only the planet but help low-income communities and communities of color. Cleveland’s working on expanding green spaces, increasing access to clean energy and creating green jobs which will benefit the community.

The key goals of CAP plan to focus on cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050, transitioning to 100% clean, renewable energy in city operations by 2035, expanding urban green spaces to improve air quality and cool the city.

Other goals include improving transportation options, making biking and walking safer and more accessible and supporting local sustainability efforts, such as urban farming and waste reduction programs.

Mayor Justin Bibb has been appointed co-chair of the national climate coalition "America is All In." Bibb is in the forefront of the movement.

"Local city halls are where the real work of implementing ambitious and lasting climate policy happens," Bibb said, in an interview with Axios.

Cleveland’s Climate Action Plan shows that real change doesn’t just happen in headlines, it happens in city councils, schools and neighborhoods. We the people must also do the work so that we can live on a healthy, happy planet.

Because the work starts with you, there are many opportunities to get involved to clean up our city. You can join organizations that are working towards clean energy, food justice or even water equity.

You can sign up for events at sustainablecleveland.org which will connect you with many like minded people working towards a greener Cleveland.

Cleveland is a resilient city whether it be our sports teams, community or building a better future for upcoming generations.

As we reflect on earth day and plan for a greener city I urge you to take action. This is the planet we live on. We must keep her lush and thriving so that she will reward us with a healthy and happy environment.

Earth day doesn't take place on just April 22, it's everyday. So let's protect and celebrate our beautiful planet.
