CSU wrestling loses to NIU in MAC dual

The Vikings fell to Northern Illinois University on Friday, Jan. 31 at the Woodling Gymnasium, despite strong individual performances.

Cleveland State wrestling fell short against Northern Illinois University, 29-14, in a Mid-American Conference dual at home at the Woodling Gymnasium on Saturday.

 

The Northern Illinois Huskies took control early, winning the first five matches to lead 23-0 at halftime. 

 

The Vikings responded after the break with a 4-1 sudden victory by Tate Geiger, at 165-pounds, putting CSU on the board at 23-3. 

 

However, the Huskies took the next bout on a 4-2 decision, extending their lead to 26-3. But an 18-0 shutout by the Vikings' JR Reed, at 184-pounds, narrowed the margin to 26-8.

 

After another close NIU sudden victory, Daniel Bucknavich, at 197-pounds, ended the night on a high note for the home team, securing a pin in just under two minutes as the Vikings lost 29-14. 

 

Next up: The  CSU wrestling team travels to Edinboro University on Thursday, Feb. 6 for a 7 p.m. dual match.
