CSU wrestling loses to Columbia in home opener
Cleveland State Wrestling lost 27-15 to the Columbia Lions on Friday in their home opener.
The Vikings started the match with a 6-4 victory by Ben Aranda at 125 pounds to lead 3-0. Jake Manley followed with a 9-3 win at 144 pounds, furthering CSU’s lead to 6-0.
The Lions fought back, winning at 141 and 149 pounds with back-to-back falls to take the lead 12-6.
Douglas Terry won 4-2 at 157 pounds to stop Columbia’s streak, bringing the score to 12-9.
However, the Lions then stretched their lead to 27-9 with a fall, technical fall and major decision in the 165, 174 and 185-pound weight classes.
CSU's Joey Lyons won 6-1 at 197 pounds and No. 18 Daniel Bucknavich closed the match with a 3-0 shutout at 285 pounds, but it wasn’t enough as the Vikings fell short.
Next up: CSU (0-1) will compete in their second open of the season at the Navy Classic on Saturday, Nov. 23, in Annapolis, Maryland.
