
CSU softball falls in season opener at JU/UNF Invitational
The Cleveland State softball team opened its season with two losses on Friday at the JU/UNF Invitational in Jacksonville, Florida.
The Vikings fell 3-0 to Jacksonville and 8-0 to North Florida.
In the opener, Jacksonville scored single runs in the first, third, and sixth innings, while CSU struggled offensively.
CSU had three single runs from Sydney Shammo, Kylie Gorsuch and Sophie Spellman.
Pitcher Katie Mcdonalds yielded just two earned runs over six innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out three.
In the second game, Brooke Albaugh hit a leadoff triple, but was left stranded as North Florida retired the next three batters.
North Florida took control with a two-run home run in the first inning and a single run in the second inning before breaking the game open with a bases-clearing three-RBI double in the fourth inning.
A final run in the sixth ended the game via run rule.
Melissa Holzopfel started in the circle, pitching four innings and allowing seven earned runs on nine hits.
Avery Robinson pitched the final two innings, giving up four hits and one earned run.
The Vikings lost again Sunday to Jacksonville (2-1) and North Florida (6-2) and are now 1-8 overall (0-0 in conference play).
Next up, the Vikings travel to Clinton, South Carolina for the Scotsman Invitational where they have five matches scheduled, opening against Monmouth University on Friday.
