Students take time out to paint pumpkins
Engineering students took time out from their studies, research and lab work on Thursday to paint pumpkins ahead of Halloween.
The Association for Biomedical and Chemical Engineers (ABCE) organized the event, "Pumpkin Painting Study Break." The ABCE puts on events every semester for the department. But this was the first time it hosted a Halloween event with pumpkin painting.
Students who attended received small pumpkins and painting supplies upon arriving. They then got to work in a fun way that helped them decompress and socialize.
Most ABCE members are biomedical and chemical engineering graduate students.
From the mood in the room, they were clearly having a good time, stepping away from the lab and doing something different.
Former ABCE President Luci Duncan, a 4th-year Ph.D. candidate, explained why the association put on the event.
“It's mainly an organization for professional development, networking, and socializing among your peers that brings the whole department together instead of just something that's class-based, having something that's more social-focused,” Duncan said.
The ABCE hosts annual picnics and department dinners as well as events like Thursday's to celebrate achievements and build community within the department.

“I feel like the organization helps you find time to hang out and have things to go to outside of being in your coursework and research all the time,” said Victoria Stege, a 5th-year PhD biomedical engineer.
Stege and the other grad students hope more undergrads in the biomedical and chemical engineering department get more involved in events hosted by ABCE. Interested students can find more information and check for upcoming events on the association's event page.
