CSU women’s basketball secures semifinal spot
Cleveland State women's basketball started its journey in the Barbasol Horizon League Tournament with a 88-78 quarterfinal win over ninth-seeded Northern Kentucky, March 7, at the Wolstein Center.
With the win, the top-seeded Vikings improved to 28-4 for the season.
The victory was a collective effort with Colbi Maples (11) leading the scoring with a season-high 31 points. Mickayla Perdue (0) followed up with 24 points, while Jordana Reisma (10) chipped in 15 points and Sara Guerreiro (12) had 10 points.
CSU’s Carmen Villalobos (13) had a team-best 10 rebounds, while Guerreiro (12) and Faith Burch (22) recorded 7 rebounds.
Game Summary
After a back-and-fourth first quarter, the Vikings went on a 11-0 run in the second quarter to gain a 33-19 lead. Northern Kentucky was able to trim it to single digits, as the Vikings went into the halftime break up 52-31.
Early in the third quarter, NKU went on a 9-0 scoring run, shrinking CSU's lead to 60-46. However, the Vikings fought back to take a 70-55 into the final quarter.
Opening the fourth quarter, Northern Kentucky closed the gap to 7 on a 10-2 run, taking the score at 72-65. However, CSU regained its composure and maintained control for the rest of the game and the 88-78 win.
