Coach Gates steers CSU to victory in season opener against Case Western
Vikings forward Jayson Woodrich led Cleveland State with 15 points while his teammates Torrey Patton and D’Moi Hodge added 12 points each to help the home team cruise to a 100-56 victory against Case Western Reserve University in their first exhibition game to start the season.
Five Vikings scored in double digits in the blowout. Patton added eight rebounds and three assists to his 12 points for a Cleveland State team looking to improve on an impressive season last year.
The Spartans had their last lead of the game, 24-23, with 7:14 remaining in the half after a Cole Frilling layup. But the Vikings responded quickly with a layup of their own from Mabor Majak 16 seconds later.
Case Western Reserve was able to keep the game close for the first half, trailing by only six points heading into the break, with the score at 41-35.
Cleveland State started to pull away early in the second half as the Spartans were unable to keep up with the host team’s offensive onslaught.
Deante Johnson hit a jump shot and D’Moi Hodge followed up with a layup less than 30 seconds into the second half to put the Vikings up by 10. Cleveland State's lead never dropped below 10 points for the rest of the contest as they were able to put the game out of reach quickly in the final half of play. The Vikings went on a 22-6 run in the first six minutes of the second half, and the score only widened from there.
With 1:15 left in the game, Chris Greene nailed a 3-point shot to put the Vikings at 98 points. Then, with just 36 seconds remaining Yahel Hill drained a layup to put the Green and White in triple digits for the day. Cleveland State only scored 100 points one time last season in a 108-104 triple overtime victory against Purdue Fort Wayne.
The Green and White outscored CWRU 59-21 to close out the game, tasting victory for the first time this season after their March Madness appearance earlier in the year.
Up next, the Vikings will take on Otterbein University in another exhibition contest next Sunday at the Wolstein Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Following the matchup with the Cardinals, the Green and White will get their regular season schedule underway in an away matchup against Brigham Young University on Nov. 9.
