Cleveland State volleyball defeats Akron 3-1
The Cleveland State women’s volleyball team closed out non-league play with a win Friday, Sept. 20, defeating Akron 3-1 win.
The Vikings extended their win streak to five straight matches, and are now 9-2 overall, going into league play, which begins this week.
Nia Hall led the Viking offense with 14 kills on a .400 hitting percentage (14-4-25), while Liberty Torres added 13 kills and JeriLynn Koehler with 11.
Ella Mihacevich had 42 assists overall, along with seven digs, five kills and two blocks.
The CSU defense was led by Emma Walker and Laken Voss who both recorded 15 digs, while Ayva Leon recorded 11.
The Vikings combined for 12 total blocks, including five from Torres and Julia Jozefov.
After dropping the first set 18-25, the Vikings rebounded in the second, picking up a 25-21 victory to even the match.
During the third set, the Vikings opened with a 7-0 run and held the lead throughout the remainder of the frame. After holding off a late Akron run, CSU took a 21-18 lead and went on to win 25-21.
Cleveland State carried its momentum into the fourth set, gaining a 14-9 lead midway through the frame, extending it to 18-10 after Mihacevich served an ace.
The Vikings closed the frame by posting the final two points, clinching the set 25-19 with a Mihacevich kill and Torres block.
Next, Cleveland State opens Horizon League play, hosting Northern Kentucky in a two-match series this weekend, Saturday, Sept. 27 and Sunday, Sept. 28.
