Suspect indicted in bomb threat that targeted CSU

Following a CSU police investigation, a Cuyahoga County grand jury indicted the suspect following the bomb threat made Nov. 4, 2021 made against Cleveland State University’s law college.

A suspect has been indicted for the bomb threat Nov. 4, 2021 that targeted Cleveland State University’s Cleveland-Marshall College of Law.

Selvin Lopez, 24, who has no affiliation with the university, was indicted Dec. 15, 2021 by the Cuyahoga County grand jury on a charge of inducing panic following an investigation by the CSU Police Department.

Cleveland State's Interim Police Chief Beverly Pettrey informed the university community of the indictment in an email sent Wednesday.

In Ohio, inducing panic is a second-degree felony when the incident takes place at a school or institution of higher learning.

Lopez's pleaded not guilty to the charge Jan. 6, 2022 and posted bail which the Cuyahoga County Court set at $5,000.

Lopez's next pretrail hearing is set for March 15. The Cuyahoga County Court case number is CR-21-666042-A.

Ongoing investigations in two other bomb threats

The bomb threats that targeted Fenn Tower (Dec.1), and Euclid Commons (Feb. 24) are still under investigation, according to Pettrey.

Both threats on the dorms were called in from Fenn Tower, the interim police chief told The Cleveland Stater.

“Our detectives are working on that currently,” Pettrey said. “Nothing has been said to me or has led me to believe that it is the same person.”

Pettrey said she could not comment on whether any indication suggested a student called in those threats.
