CSU wrestling recovers with dominant win over OU
In CSU's second Mid-American Conference meeting of the season, the Vikings on Feb. 14 faced the Ohio University Bobcats, earning a 23-12 victory over them to improve to 1-1 on the season.
After OU won the first two bouts at 125 and 133 pounds, Vikings redshirt freshman Joseph Caprella got his team on the board with his effort at 141, beginning a rally of five straight victories for CSU.
Caprella earned his first collegiate pin late in the first period of the 141-pound match. He opened with an exciting takedown near the edge of the circle before OU’s Kyran Hagan tied things up at 2-2. However, Caprella answered back with a reversal that led to the fall.
CSU's redshirt sophomore Marcus Robinson was in control for the majority of his match at 149 pounds. Robinson grabbed his fifth win of the year with a dominant 10-1 decision. He moved to a perfect 2-0 in Mid-American Conference while putting his team up 10-6 overall.
Vikings' freshman Daniel Patten fought into overtime against Nick Vestal at 157 pounds in what was one of the fiercest matches of the afternoon. Vestal was ahead 1-0 entering the third round, prompting Patten to begin the period on the mat. He managed an escape after being pushed out of bounds to tie it at 1-1. Vestal was awarded a takedown with the clock winding down in the third period, but a successful challenge from the CSU coaching staff sent the bout to sudden-death overtime.
Neither wrestler scored in overtime, which caused a pair of 30-second tiebreakers, beginning with CSU's Patten on top. Patten controlled Vestal for the entirety of the first period before another Cleveland State challenge resulted in another point for Patten due to a technical violation on a locked hands call. Patten ultimately took the bout 5-1.
Redshirt sophomore Riley Smucker spent the majority of the 165-pound match in mount over Ohio's Kamal Adewumi, earning five takedowns while notching the riding time point for another major decision at 11-1 to extend Cleveland State's lead to 17-6 with four bouts remaining.
In the bout at 174 pounds, Anthony Rice managed four of five takedowns in a 10-4 win, also grabbing the extra point for riding time.
Entering with a national ranking to his name for the first time, CSU's DeAndre Nassar dropped to 5-2 after a tough overtime loss that went the distance against Carson Brewer at 184 pounds. Nassar trailed 1-0 before a third-period escape tied things up. The sudden-death period was scoreless before both wrestlers escaped during the 30-second ride out periods.
Brewer began the second extra frame on the ground and nearly broke loose before Nassar tossed him back to the mat. Brewer took the lead with an escape, but after an unsuccessful OU challenge, Nassar began the final ride out on bottom and escaped. Brewer's 25 seconds of riding time earned him a 4-3 decision.
Vikings' freshman Justin Jaekin wrestled a cautious style at 197 pounds but would achieve the goal of clinching the dual win for CSU, dropping 1-0 while keeping the Bobcats from earning extra points and maintaining a 20-12 Vikings advantage with only one match remaining.
John Kelbly would put the final touch on a successful night for Cleveland State with his win over Jordan Earnest in the heavyweight bout at 285 pounds. Kelbly forced overtime with an escape in the final seconds, making the score 4-4. The redshirt junior avoided early resistance from Earnest in the extra frame and earned a takedown for the 6-4 win.
With the conclusion of the regular season, the Vikings have embarked on a two-week preparation period for the MAC Tournament beginning on Feb. 26-27 at a time to be announced.
