'Friends' to tour Grays Armory
The Friends of the Library group will tour Grays Armory Museum on March 13 during spring break week.
The group established this annual tour tradition in 2013 to give students the opportunity to visit a historical place in Cleveland’s history and to learn more about its heritage.
Left: Grays Armory Museum, 1234 Bolivar Road, housed Cleveland’s militia beginning in 1897.
In 1837, 118 men banded together to create a militia and named themselves the “Grays,” which led to the name, Grays Armory.
Built in 1893, Grays Armory is one of the oldest standing buildings in Cleveland and the oldest independent armory in the United States.
Because the nation had not yet established a national guard, the federal government called upon local militias like the Grays to fill the role.
The Grays saw action in the Civil War, Spanish-American War, Mexican Border Campaign and World War I.
Grays Armory also served other functions in the Cleveland community. The Cleveland Orchestra played its first concert there and famous performers appeared there. It was also the site of the first auto show in Cleveland.
The Friends of the Library wanted to make sure that students knew of this storied landmark.
