CSU falls to Youngstown State in 3-game series
In the Horizon League showdown, Cleveland State and Youngstown State went head-to-head in a three-game series at Viking Field on Thursday and Friday.
Game one
In a game that was a pitching duel, the YSU Penguins won 1-0 in an extra eighth inning. The game saw seven hits and four walks. CSU pitcher Melissa Holzopfel had 15 strikeouts, tying her career high.
Game two
On Friday, the two teams competed in a doubleheader. Two singles from CSU's Brooke Albaugh and Holzopfel scored the first runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning. In the seventh inning, CSU scored again, for a 3-1 win.
Game three
The second game of the doubleheader began with a two-run score from the Vikings in the first inning. However, YSU moved quickly past CSU in the second inning, scoring four runs. In the third inning, YSU scored 2 and did it again in the fourth innings, before closing out with a commanding 8-3 win and 2-1 series win.
Youngstown State currently lead the Horizon League with a 17-4 record. Cleveland State is in 4th place at 12-9.
CSU closes out its regular season this weekend, against visiting Northern Kentucky in another three-game series starting on Friday.
