Synchronized headphones provided a night of dancing at CAB’s Silent Disco
The only thing that observers could hear and see was the shuffling of feet and quiet expressions of those in action.
That was the scene Thursday at the Silent Disco put on by the Campus Activities Board at Cleveland State.
"Silent disco” might sound like an odd term to anyone who has never gone to one. They might think, “Music — how could it be silent?”
However, when the tools are available to keep a dance party silent, it makes for an interesting and different evening.
CAB assistant chair Tyrese Rushton said the headphones were central to the event, as attendees could only hear the music by wearing one of the pairs provided for them. They could choose from three channels.
"The headphones sync together,” Rushton explained, offering listeners the opportunity to enjoy the same music as each other. "They have a dial on the side to search each channel.”
While the groups of students dancing didn’t quite reach crowd levels, Rushton said the turnout for the event -- held in the Glasscock Family Foundation Ballroom -- was as expected.
“About 25-30 people came and danced for a good hour each,” Rushton said. “It was a good chance for students to be able to enjoy themselves doing something out of the ordinary before midterms start.”
The lights were off and the headphones emitted a glow from each earpiece, lighting up the room along with a few party lights.
The playlists included artists like Eminem, DJ Casper and Village People.
Attendees said they had a good time. Some said they wished CSU and CAB would put on more events like the Silent Disco more often.
