The Cleveland chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) held its annual Student Day event on Oct. 20, 2023 at the U.S. headquarters of Eaton Corp.

PRSA hosts 'Monster Mash' Student Day 2023

CSU public relations students planned the day for area professionals and students to connect face-to-face. Some 90 students and professionals attended the event.

The Cleveland chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) on Oct. 20 held 'Moster Mash,' this year's title for the organization's annual event bringing together prospective employers and students from across the greater Cleveland region.

At Student Day students and recent alums can network face-to-face with professionals across a spectrum of careers in the communications field. For the past three years, Student Day has been held at 1000 Eaton Blvd., the U.S. headquarters of Eaton Corp., a global power management company.

This year's event attracted close to 100 attendees. It was organized by Cleveland State University students taking COM 447, "Promotional Production," their capstone class, with help from their class adviser, Beth Thomas, Ph.D.

Professionals from a variety of businesses spoke at Student Day. Some of the businesses represented were the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, JOANN, Eaton, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Marcus Thomas LLC.

“This is the third year in a row that my students have planned Student Day, and it has been the most successful yet,” Dr. Thomas said. “We had more than 90 professionals and students attend and received lots of positive feedback.”

After the presentations, students and professionals began speed networking. Students roamed from table to table, with five minutes to put their best foot forward and connect with potential employers, with questions from internship opportunities to career trajectories.

“I feel that everything really pulled together nicely," said Nathan Previts, a COM 447 student and treasurer of the PRSA CSU student chapter. “We were able to execute our plan for the day and keep on track as planned, while still being able to have fun with it.”

During speed networking, Eaton representatives also took groups of students to their in-house studio in the basement. The studio includes a full size green screen, a podcast setup and chairs set up for an interview.
