The Mareyjoyce Green Women’s Center at Cleveland State University has become a safe space for students looking for support on campus.

The center offers resources for women, men and non-binary people throughout the semester. It strives to bring equity to campus through its support of students.

“Overall, we are focused on advancing gender equity on CSU’s campus to the benefit of all members of the CSU community,” said the center's assistant director Evie DuVernay.

Previously, the center was part of the Women's Comprehensive Program at CSU, which included the Women’s Studies major and minor, founded by Mareyjoyce Green, former associate professor of Sociology and Women's Studies.

Green, in collaboration with Dr. Roberta Steinbacher, professor emerita of Urban Studies, created the Push to Achievement Program. The program included a partnership with the Cuyahoga County Department of Human Services Welfare Division, allowing students receiving public assistance to earn a four-year degree.

CSU officially renamed the center the Mareyjoyce Green Women’s Center in March of 2009, the same month Green was recognized by the U.S. House of Representatives for her civic work.

Menstruation products, lactation spaces, safe-sex products, parental supports and a professional clothing closet can all be found at the center. A feminist library is also available to students through the center.

In addition to supporting students with necessary spaces and products, the center also employs students to help create a safe and welcoming environment.

“We have a number of amazing student staff who help to make the Women’s Center a welcoming, equity driven, educational and supportive space,” said DuVernay.

All resources and services are open to students during the center’s business hours, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, in Berkman Hall room 142.

If students need help outside of business hours, they can also reach the center at 216-687-4674.
