CSU’s Lift Up Vikes! food pantry supports students in need

The Cleveland State community donated food and hygiene products to support students in need during the end-of-semester drive to make sure the food pantry is filled ahead of the winter break.

Cleveland State University's Lift Up Vikes! Resource Center and Food Pantry held a "Fill the Trunk" event, Nov. 18-22 for donations to stock the community's food pantry ahead of the winter break.

The department that donated the most food, drinks and hygiene products was announced Nov. 25. The office of the CSU president, reigning champions from last year, were the top donors again.

“(President) Bloomberg cares very deeply about Lift Up Vikes! and the mission that we have,” said Megan Ashwill, coordinator of LiftUp Vikes! “She and I have worked very closely to make sure that this is a priority for the university.”

Lift Up Vikes! is in Berkman Hall room 122. It works in partnership with the Cleveland Greater Food Bank to bridge gaps in students' basic needs, ensuring that they have essential products and can focus on their education and avoid food insecurity.

“Working here, I have heard from students that they are very grateful for the food pantry,” said Dylan Repertorio, Manager of Lift Up Vikes! “Anyone can come on Fridays without an appointment that needs to get the essential products.”

The pantry serves over 300 appointments weekly and has walk-in hours from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays.

Popular items that students go to get include hygiene products and staples like granola bars and ramen noodles for people living on or near campus.

Despite the work of the annual drive and support of the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, items are often in short supply, as 95% of the organization's resources come from donations, relying heavily on community contributions.

For those looking to volunteer, the opportunities are limited to members of student organizations who can assist with unloading and stocking during delivery days. Lift Up Vikes! also encourages students to donate or take part in campus-wide donation drives that are held each semester.

To make an appointment, visit the Lift Up Vikes! website. Students can also follow the pantry on Instagram @csu_luvikes or email liftupvikes@csuohio.edu for any questions you have, about services, how to get involved or how to contribute.
