Press Club of Cleveland honors CSU communications professor

Richard M. Perloff, Ph.D., professor of communication and political science at Cleveland State University, recently received statewide recognition from The Press Club of Cleveland for three opinion essays he wrote in 2019.

Professor Perloff's work was published in The Plain Dealer. The club -- an organization serving the area's journalists and communications professionals since 1887 -- presented Perloff its Best in Ohio Essay Writing award at the 2020 All Ohio Excellence in Journalism Awards event held via Zoom on Aug. 7.

“Getting these types of awards is an honor. I was surprised and very pleased, it’s a labor of love,” Perloff said.

Perloff has been a faculty member at Cleveland State University since 1979 and has earned accolades for his work. His 2020 award was the third time in a row he had won the press club's Best in Ohio Essay Writing.

His most recent award-winning essays were “Despite the Naysaying, School Busing Worked,” “In An Everything-Goes Online World, We Need Old-Fashioned, Bootstrapped Journalists More Than Ever,” and “The Border Wall Stalemate Is Nothing Compared to Brexit Crisis, and What It Reveals About Western Democracies’ Populists Revolt.”

The Press Club of Cleveland called Perloff’s writing "thought provoking and well stated," and said it challenged the reader "in unexpected, searing ways.”

“Writing was always an escape for me and something that I enjoyed, and I was able to find my journalistic roots about 15 years ago,” Perloff said. “The last thing I wanted to do was go into academics but there ended up being an enchantment to it.”

Perloff earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy and writing news at the University of Michigan and later earned a master's in communication from the University of Pittsburgh and a Ph.D. in mass communications from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

His scholarly work includes a range of books and articles. He was chair and founding director of the CSU School of Communication. Currently, in addition to his teaching and writing, he serves as adviser to the campus student newspaper, The Cauldron.

Perloff and several students wrote a scholarly article over the summer and will present it on Oct. 3 via Zoom at the Ohio Communication Association.
