Playhouse Square reveals seven new Broadway shows for 2021

Cleveland’s Playhouse Square revealed on March 3 seven hit Broadway musicals it would feature in the 2021 Keybank Broadway Series.

The official 2021 series will kick off not in 2021, but at the end of 2020 with “To Kill a Mockingbird.” The 1960 novel received a musical adaptation by Aaron Sorkin in 2018 and follows the plot of the book.

In addition to “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Sorkin has worked on both the film and musical version of “A Few Good Men” as well as receiving writing credit on the movie,“The Social Network.” “To Kill a Mockingbird” will run at Playhouse Square from Nov. 3 to Nov. 22.

Audience Choice Award winner “Pretty Woman: The Musical” will visit Playhouse Square from Jan. 5 to Jan. 24, 2021. An adaption of the 1990 film of the same name, “Pretty Woman: The Musical” first premiered on stage in 2018. After showings in both Chicago and Broadway, “Pretty Woman” will bring its Hollywood story to Cleveland in 2021.

Shortly after “Pretty Woman” takes its leave, “The Cher Show” will take its place from Feb. 5 to Feb. 24. “The Cher Show” follows the life of musical artist Cher, taking place in three acts over her staggering six-decade career. As a jukebox musical, fans will hear all the familiar hits from Cher when it takes the stage in February.

Playhouse Square will open its spring season with “The Prom” debuting in Cleveland. The comedy musical premiered at Alliance Theatre in Atlanta in 2016 before being picked up by Broadway in 2018. Over its four years in theaters, this creation of Jack Viertel has received both a film and novel adaption as well as a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical.

Next comes “Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations,” another jukebox musical that follows the Detroit-based funk band through their careers. After premiering on Broadway in 2019, “Ain’t Too Proud” will also be making its first United States tour in July 2020 and will come to Cleveland from April 6 to April 25, 2021. “Ain’t Too Proud” has also won a Tony Award for Best Choreography.

Classic cabaret and musical “Moulin Rouge!” will also make its way to Playhouse Square to kick off the theater’s summer season in Cleveland. “Moulin Rouge!” advertises itself as “a world of splendor and romance, of eye-popping excess, of glitz, grandeur and glory” and promises to deliver on that advertisement when it comes to Cleveland from May 5 to June 6, 2021.

Finally, after a month off from Broadway shows, Playhouse Square will run Broadway’s newest smash hit, “Hadestown.” The mythological musical will run at Playhouse from July 6 to July 25. “Hadestown” has already taken home eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The musical adaptation of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice has swept the nation since premiering off-Broadway in 2016, and its Playhouse Square debut will be one of the most highly anticipated musical debuts in Cleveland in quite some time.
