Athletic Director retires after short stinat CSU

Cleveland State University Director of Athletics Michael Thomas announced his resignation from the position, effective Dec. 31, 2018. Thomas held the position for just under two years.

Cleveland State representatives and Thomas offered little explanation behind the sudden resignation, saying the decision was personal. Thomas said in an article published on that his family is moving south and he plans to pursue consulting and teaching opportunities in North Carolina.

President Harlan Sands broke the news by email Nov. 27. In the letter, Sands thanked Thomas for his time within the athletics department and praised him for the accomplishments of its programs under his tutelage.

“We appreciate the work that Mike has done during his time at CSU to support our student-athletes, and wish him well in all of his future endeavors,” Sands said.

Thomas’s time at Cleveland State saw four athletics programs – men’s and women’s golf, men’s tennis and volleyball – win Horizon League championships. Along with that, university student athletes have a cumulative 3.3 GPA and the 2018 Horizon League Spring Academic Honor Roll included 80 Cleveland State student-athletes.

Cleveland State hired Thomas in February, 2017 to replace retiring Athletic Director John Parry. Thomas brought with him more than 30 years of experience in college athletics administration, including time at the University of Akron and the University of Illinois as athletic director.

Sands said in his email that the university will appoint an interim director of athletics prior to winter break, and a search for a full-time replacement will begin immediately.
