CSU athletic director named to NCAA council

Over the summer Cleveland State’s Athletic Director Mike Thomas was named to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division one council. Thomas will represent the Horizon League Conference of which Cleveland State is a member.

The NCAA Council has 40 members. The council members includes a member from each of the 32 Division I conferences, four commissioners, two student-athletes and 2 faculty athletic administrators. athletic directions may on be a part of the council for two years, but they would be eligible to be re-elected.

The councils main purpose is to oversee the daily decisions for Division I athletics. Every division one conference is represented on the council.

Thomas was named athletic director of Cleveland State on February 8, 2017, becoming the sixth athletic director in the universities history and has been part of college athletics for over thirty years, including three previous stops as the school’s athletic director for the Akron Zips, Cincinnati Bearcats as well as Illinois Fighting Illini.

Thomas’ term will expire in June of 2018, but will be eligible for reappointment.

The council is one of many committees that make up the NCAA. The NCAA incorporated Division I Competition Oversight Committee, Football Oversight Committee, Legislative Committee, Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee, Strategic Vision and Planning Committee, Student-Athlete Experience Committee and finally, Women’s Basketball Oversight Committee.
