ASC 101 implements peer mentoring

This semester marks the first time certain sections of ASC 101: Introduction to University LifeĀ  will have peer-mentors because of the efforts of the First Year Experience department.

The peer mentors program is set to help ease newcomers into college-life by providing freshmen taking ASC 101 with a direct line of communication to more experienced college students who are well versed in college life at Cleveland State University

In an attempt to get things started, First Year Experience has paired five peer mentors with five professors to help assist students in their respective sections of ASC 101 according to Claudia Lilie, manager of First Year Experience.

The peer mentors are selected sophomore students who maintain at least a 3.0 GPA, Lilie said. The role of each peer mentor changes from section to section but the ultimate goal is to help freshman master college life and ensure their success at Cleveland State.

“Other universities across the country that have implemented this have had great success,” Lilie said. “So we’re looking at their models and figuring out what works for us here.”

First Year Experience plans to expand the program to cover all sections of ASC 101 within five years. In the future, the program intends to use students who stand out in the class as potential peer mentors, Lilie said.
